OPEC+ & U.S. Shale: The Great Tug O’ War Continues
David Meats, Senior Equity Analyst, Energy, Morningstar
OPEC+ appears to have gotten its ducks in a row again after severely misjudging the ability of U.S. shale firms to continue increasing their oil output last year. By overcompensating, it inadvertently contributed to rising global stockpiles. The result is an uneasy alliance that puts supply and demand on level pegging for the time being. The problem is that there’s no room for expansion on either side of the equation - U.S. producers intend to keep growing, and OPEC doesn’t want to permanently reduce its share. If no-one blinks another round of oversupply is likely.
