Sarah Newcomb, Ph.D., is a behavioral economist and Director of Financial Psychology at Morningstar. In this role, she works to integrate the findings of her research into Morningstar financial management applications and tools.
An interdisciplinary scholar, Newcomb has expertise in consumer psychology, economic decision-making, personal money management, and cognitive and social psychology. Before joining Morningstar in 2015, she earned her doctorate in behavioral economics from the University of Maine, where her work focused on the psychological barriers to sound personal money management. She is the author of LOADED: Money, Psychology, and How to Get Ahead without Leaving Your Values Behind (Wiley, 2016).
Newcomb also holds a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Salem State University, a master’s degree in financial economics from University of Maine, and a master’s certification in personal financial planning from Bentley University.
Peter Bryant is Head of Business Development, Australia & New Zealand for Morningstar. Peter has 20 years’ experience in the financial services industry, achieved across a range of roles and disciplines. Throughout his career, Peter has demonstrated a track record of leading teams to deliver great outcomes for customers and business partners.
Starting his career as a lawyer, Peter spent several years with a large Sydney law firm before becoming an in-house lawyer at ASX-listed trustee services provider, The Trust Company. As their Group General Counsel, Peter led legal, risk, governance and compliance teams in providing market-leading trustee services across the funds management and superannuation industries. Following the acquisition of The Trust Company by Perpetual, Peter spent seven years at the Commonwealth Bank initially as Chief of Staff to the Group Executive, Wealth Management. Following this, Peter was Executive Manager for the NSW/ACT Region of the Commonwealth Bank’s salaried financial planning business, leading 100+ financial planning professionals in providing financial advice to the Bank’s customers. Later, Peter was General Manager, Advice Services where he led a multi-disciplinary team to equip the Bank’s financial planners with the tools they need to provide financial advice to more Australians.
Peter has served as a member of the Financial Services Council Advice Board Committee and its Trustee Services Board Committee. He has also been a member of the Financial Planning Association’s Professional Standards Committee. He has a Bachelor of Business (Accounting) and a Bachelor of Laws (First Class Honours) from the University of Technology, Sydney. Peter is a regular commentator on the wealth management industry and a presenter at financial services industry events across Australia. Topics on which Peter has presented include the power of financial planning to change a customer’s ‘family tree’, the need for professionalism across the financial services sector and leading high performing teams.
